India takes a sip of sizzling hot Java...

The India Internet Java Users Group (IIJUG)

Unless you were born yesterday, you have definitely heard the clamor of the sprawling Internet. Ideas that used to run for Oscars in the sci-fi category a few years back, are, in the blink of an eye, being reckoned to be a part of day-to-day life! It is needless to reiterate the wonders of Internet, or how it has retrenched the big, wide world into a microcosm of infotainment. Indeed, it would hardly be melodramatic to call the 90s 'The Dawn of a miniature world'! And this colossal sweep that is bowling the world over, is all the result of Sun Microsystem's programming language called Java...

Just for the record, it is not we who are singing paeans to it. That job has been taken care of by 'Fortune', 'Business Week', 'Hot Wired', 'Dr. Dobbs' and 'The NewYork Times', to name a few. Furthermore, on 4th December, 1995, twenty eight major players in the industry (including the ilk of Oracle, Netscape, Novell, Hewlett Packard, Borland, AT&T and IBM) got together and endorsed their support to the Java Revolution. That's not merely a testament to the romance and excitement of its potential, but also to the fact that for the first time in digital history, information processing ,only months ago derided by nerds as number-crunching, is now a cool, mass-participation sport. Whatever its ultimate impact, Java has already established itself as the first computer-programming language with glamour. It allows Internet sites to fully incorporate motion and sound, real-time information updates, user customization and feedback, but what really takes the cake is the unprecedented concept of Virtual Machine. The Net can become the source of an enormous array of services, utilitarian to frivolous, with all the bells and whistles - a far cry from the still pictures and frozen information typically served up now.

Realizing the need for some sort of body in India that could help our IT professionals (who are among the best in the world) to keep themselves abreast of the cutting edge of technology, we have constituted what we feel is Asia's first group on Java Programming. The group, 'India Internet Java Users Group' as it is called, plans to meet every month to outline its activities. It proposes to hold seminars, training programs, live interactive demos etc. to educate computer-literates as well as illiterates on how Java is all set to change lives. The outlined objectives of IIJUG (pronounced as 'I square jug') include...

The IIJUG is chaired by Mr. Vijay Mukhi, India's premier Internet guru and computer expert, with Mr. K. Pandyan, CEO, Microgiga Infotech Pvt. Ltd., as the co-chairman. It also comprises of Ms. Sonal Kotecha as President, Mr. Shashank Tripathi as Secretary .

If you felt like a dunce when you read an article on Java in a magazine (and most surely you did cuz the whole wide world is yapping about it), have a peep at our Java Tutorial or sneak back to VIJAY MUKHI'S TECHNOLOGY CORNUCOPIA . For all the comments, suggestions etc you can reach us at vmukhi@giasbm01.vsnl.net.in . If you are interested in some cool Java links, do some site-seeing with the sites we recommend.
